Yes, pho is truly a favorite breakfast dish for many people, but not everyone fully understands Hanoi pho. According to information from the Heritage Management Department under the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, every district, town, and suburb in the city has at least one pho restaurant. Currently, Hanoi has nearly 700 pho restaurants in operation. The traditional pho brands have a history of more than two centuries, serving either beef pho or chicken pho, primarily concentrated in the Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, and Hai Ba Trung districts.

Pho not only demonstrates the sophistication of Hanoi people in each step of its preparation but also in how it’s enjoyed. Culinary experts, researchers, writers, and poets all recognize that pho is a special gift from Hanoi. Although pho is not exclusive to Hanoi, it is in Hanoi where it achieves its most exquisite flavor. The decision to include Hanoi Pho in the list of national intangible cultural heritage elements honors the communities that preserve the cultural expressions and the diverse heritage values within those communities. The decision acknowledges the knowledge and expertise of the people in maintaining and expressing the cultural diversity and heritage values in these communities.
